Clubs/Activities

Excellence ~ Wisdom ~  Joy ~ Gratitude

Delaware Valley Classical School provides many enjoyable and intriguing opportunities for Logic and Rhetoric students to excel outside of the classroom in different venues.  Each activity or club listed below allows  students to discover their unique talents whether it be competing in Science Olympiad or Math League or volunteering in the community via National Honor Society.

Chess Club

Chess club gives students an opportunity to hone their chess skills and share strategies with each other. The students have enjoyed having the time to play full games and try out new tactics.

Debate Team

The Debate Team offers DVCS students opportunities to compete in tournaments against students from other schools. We participate in 2-3 tournaments each year. Debaters practice solid research, careful listening, critical thinking, edifying speech, and an overall demeanor of civility, all as expressions of our Christian discipleship.

Recent tournament topics were “Resolved: Democratic Socialism, as advocated by some Democratic Party presidential candidates, is compatible with America’s existing Constitutional system” and “Resolved: Protecting the environment is an essential part of Christian virtue.”

Math League

Math League is an interscholastic mathematics competition for 7th-12th grades. Students work both individually and as a team to solve “brain twister” type problems. There are four after-school meets, one each month from November to February. Public and private schools across Delaware are divided into regions containing four to six different schools. High-scoring participants compete at the Invitational Meet in Dover at the end of each season.

Mock Trial

Mock trial is a great fit for classically trained students and requires the employment of a varied skill set: rhetoric, memorization, performance, storytelling through the use of questions, thinking on your feet, and working within a fixed set of rules (both procedural and evidentiary). Students work diligently to prepare their case, and all teams present both the prosecution (or plaintiff) and defense cases. In February 2020, DVCS competed in the Delaware Mock Trial Competition for the first time, taking a number of Best Attorney and Best Witness awards in the process. Mock trial is as fun as it is educational!

National Honor Society

The DVCS Chapter of the National Honor Society is a duly chartered and affiliated chapter of the prestigious National Honor Society organization. Membership is open to 10th-12th grade students who meet the required standards in four areas of evaluation: scholarship, service, leadership, and Christian character. The purpose of the National Honor Society, formed in 1921, is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, to develop character, and to encourage citizenship.

Science Olympiad

Each year, Delaware Valley Classical School sends a team of middle school students and a team of high school students to the Delaware Science Olympiad in Dover, Delaware. At the Olympiad, each team of 15 students competes in 24 different science and engineering events from designing and building a Boomilever, Mission Possible device, or a bottle rocket to delving into the details of Astronomy, Genetics, or Protein Modeling. Our teams have consistently placed in the top 5 at the state level competition held each spring.
