DVCS Athletics

The Delaware Valley Classical School athletic program is built upon values that build winning programs but, more importantly, glorify Jesus Christ. The recipe for success on a playing field is clear. There must be hard work, commitment, passion, humility, and a unity that brings young people together. Simply put, a united group of hardworking, committed, passionate, yet humble athletes, stands a great chance of winning an athletic contest. These attributes, however, have a far greater significance than forming winning programs. These traits magnify the Father who gives us all good things (James 1:7).  Every drill, practice, or athletic contest has eternal value when done with attributes that reflect glory to Jesus Christ.

And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him (Colossians 3:17).

Athletics provide the studio in which these traits can be played out. The classroom provides knowledge of the value of commitment, the “how” of team building, and the purpose of sacrifice.  The  athletic forum, however, puts knowledge into practice. Truly, this is where the head knowledge becomes embedded into hearts as character is formed.

High school athletics can take on a romantic quality: The ball falls through the net in the last moment, the running back finds the end zone on the final play, or the volleyball player makes the game-ending serve. While the anticipation of such theatrics makes the games fun, the reality of high school athletics is that success takes hard work. Some have made high school sports the avenue in which a player will secure a college athletic scholarship. Late game theatrics and scholarships may be a part of the journey, but it is the journey of daily commitment, hard work, and selflessness toward teammates that build a young man or young woman into a faithful, driven, and humble person. Again, the traits that magnify Jesus Christ. The Bible speaks of God using the difficult moments to shape and strengthen the believer’s faith (Romans 5:4).

DVCS Athletics values the journey of a high school athlete. Every win, every loss, every sprint, every injury, every high-five, every trophy presentation, and every athletic scholarship is part of a journey that creates lifetime memories and lifetime character.
